How do you deal with gendered things? Clothes shopping, bathrooms, forms, etc.
Clothing is probably the easiest. I generally buy gender neutral in stores and buy a lot of clothing online. My favorite style of clothing is Chinese hanfu, where the men and women’s clothing is almost identical. I want that style to make a comeback.
I haven’t filled out any paperwork lately asking for gender. Google and Facebook now have “other” as an option for gender and I don’t think twitter even asked for a gender when I filled out the profile. If a form asks for a gender (and isn’t medical) I’ll usually not follow through with filling it out.
Bathrooms are a tricky issue right now. I use the bathroom of my assigned gender because it’s really not a big deal for me, but I’ll put in my earbuds and listen to music to give myself the illusion of privacy.
I guess my overall strategy is to ignore gendered items. I imagine the question is much more interesting to other people, but I’m very neutral on the subject unless someone starts talking about the stupid bathroom laws were you have to use the bathroom of your assigned gender at birth. My coworkers are up to speed now and the actual facts whether they like it or not.
